Drip irrigation is an efficient method for integrating water and fertilizer into crop irrigation. Using drippers, water and nutrients are delivered evenly to the plant roots, maximizing absorption. This technique offers several advantages, including water and fertilizer conservation, reduced labor and pesticide use, and improved crop quality and efficiency. Drip fertigation technology has shown excellent results in greenhouse vegetable production, particularly with tomatoes. Below is an overview of drip irrigation and fertigation techniques specifically for tomato cultivation.

- Drip irrigation and fertilization device
In the greenhouse, install 1 to 2 drip irrigation pipes per ridge, with drippers facing upward. Space the drip heads approximately 30 cm apart. At the front end, equip the system with a differential pressure fertilization tank or a venturi fertilizer injector, along with a mesh filter.
- Drip irrigation and fertilization methods
Drip irrigation should be applied in small amounts and at frequent intervals. After planting, irrigate promptly with 20-25 cubic meters per mu to establish seedlings. During the seedling and flowering stages, irrigate sparingly, typically 1 or 2 times, with each irrigation delivering 6-10 cubic meters per mu and adding 3-5 kg of fertilizer per mu each time. From the fruit expansion to the harvest period, apply drip irrigation every 5 to 10 days, using 6-12 cubic meters per acre and adding 4-6 kg of fertilizer per acre. Based on the tomato growth stage, adjust water and fertilizer levels accordingly. Cease irrigation and fertilization 10 to 15 days before the final harvest.

Drip irrigation fertilizers can include homemade fertilizers (urea, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, white powder potassium chloride, etc.) or specialized fertilizers designed for drip systems. It is recommended to use specialized fertilizers, as they offer high nutrient content and essential trace elements. The N-P-K ratios vary by stage: about 1.2:0.7:1.1 in the early stage, 1.1:0.5:1.4 in the mid-stage, and 1:0.3:1.7 in the late stage.
2. Dissolve the fertilizer in water, stir thoroughly, let it sit, then pour the filtered solution into the fertilization tank. Typically, fertilizer is added 20 to 30 minutes after irrigation begins. For differential pressure systems, allow 40 to 60 minutes to ensure even and adequate distribution.
3. After each fertilization, continue to run the system for 20 to 30 minutes to flush the tubing. At the end of each growing season, open the filter’s drain valve to clean it. Additionally, after every 3 to 5 fertigation cycles, open the end of the drip lines to flush the system thoroughly.

- Prevent Damage: Avoid scratching or puncturing the drip tape, main pipe, or fertigation machine components during installation and field operations.
- Storage: When not in use, store the drip tape and fertigation machine in a cool, dry place to ensure longevity.
